Networking - Easy as 1, 2, 3

Start by practicing within your close proximity. Ask a friend or associate about feedback on what you do. For example, "As you know I've been working with XYZ Corp selling detergent to hotels. I really like it. We just have the best product out there and it really helps me do my job. I'm trying to get the word out to more people to let them know what we can do for them. Do you have any suggestions on how I can do that?"

To many people this isn't even networking - but notice the following things:
  1. you mention the name of your company, your product, and your target client
  2. you validate the effectiveness of your product
  3. you ask for help or advice
Guess what. This technique includes the most important aspects of successful networking. It's positive and engages the person, even if at first glance they're unrelated to your clientele. People love to help, and once you start asking for advice, you will be very surprised at what can happen and you may learn a lot.

July 2004 Newsletter

Networking - the more connections the better!

Brad Frederick In the last newsletter we covered Set/Track Goals. This issue we turn to the second business fundamental of Networking. I'm sure most would agree that networking is an important part of business. I'm also sure most would agree that if you are not an extrovert, that networking can be very uncomfortable. Well it doesn't have to be with the right approach.

First, networking is not an activity that you do at a given event. If you do that, you'll likely come off as insincere. Effective networkers have integrated what they do professionally into who they are. The first and easiest way to do that is to really believe in your product or offering. That makes it so much easier to be an ambassador. Second, networking shouldn't be forced. It's a skill that comes out through some conscious efforts, but you should never seek to force yourself to "network." For this column I asked my business partner, Antoine Dubeauclard - the ultimate networker, for an example of a successful networking scenario (see sidebar).

Other suggestions I would offer for successful networking include:
  • Find common/shared interests
  • Listen and be sincere
  • Maintain good eye contact
  • Relax and enjoy yourself
Using these techniques networking will become more natural. The Chamber offers many opportunities for networking from serving on committees to attending the many functions.
