Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement is an exciting and rewarding program, using hands on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with the business community, Junior Achievement brings the real world to students by teaching the value of free enterprise, business and economics and the importance of staying in school to improve the quality of their lives. Umicore is sponsoring all of the classes at one of the elementary schools. Pictured her are one of our JA volunteers, Kendrick Kemp along with Marcie Lemieux of Umicore (left) and a teacher and students.
In its fourth year, the Junior Achievement (JA) / Auburn Hill Chamber of Commerce partnership continues to grow in the Auburn Hills community. This partnership has brought business and educators together to bring real world experience to over 1000 children in Auburn Hills. Our trained business volunteers serve as role models for students by sharing their own career and business stories along with the JA curriculum. No other non-profit organization has the "in-the-classroom reach."
The volunteer commitment is easy. No teaching experience is needed. Volunteers receive instruction on how to teach grade specific Junior Achievement programs and how to manage and motivate children in the classroom. After attending a training session, volunteers are assigned to a classroom with a commitment to teach five sessions (between 30-45 minutes each) during school hours. Schedules are worked out between teachers and volunteers to accommodate all involved. If you are interested in volunteering please call the Chamber office 248.853.7862.
Past and returning volunteers have great things to say about the program/
"Well, what can I say? How much fun I had!"
"How much I enjoyed JA."
"The children were so much fun."
"What a terrific feeling it gave me."
"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to join JA and I am excited to do it again!!"
"The kids are really enjoying the program and to be honest I'm actually a bit sad that it’s almost over."
In addition to being fun, please remember that the programs taught through JA help students better understand economics, free enterprise and how business works. Better educated students become prime candidates to the workforce and productive citizens to help the economy as a whole.
For more information or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer please call the Chamber at 248.853.7862. Visit the Junior Achievement website to learn more about this great organization.
